Researchers at the Swedish Karolinska Institute conducted a study back in 2014 regarding sunbathing and the risk of death.
The Independent published the study which claims women who are not sunbathing during summer have 50% higher risk of death than those who sunbathe on a daily basis.
The study lasted for 20 years and included 30,000 participants, all women. The results showed the participants who avoided sunbathing had double the mortality risk of those exposed to the sun every day.
So, this means that the popular belief that sun exposure is harmful and sunscreen application beneficial is actually wrong. It turns out minimizing sun exposure with the help of sunscreens is more harmful than beneficial.
This happens because avoiding the sun and applying sunscreens at the same time doesn’t allow your body to produce the best form of vitamin D. It is the vitamin D3 that we get from the UVB rays.

The late Bernard Ackerman, MD, is one of the founding figures in the field of skin cancer and the effects of sunscreens, sun, and the risk of melanoma skin cancer.
In The New York Times’ article “I BEG TO DIFFER”, he explains that there’s no proof of an actual link between sun exposure and melanoma.
So, no one can assert that sunburns or sun exposure increases the risk or lead to cancer. Also, no one can claim that sunscreens prevent melanoma.
In 2000, a team of researchers from Sweden realized that higher rate of melanoma appeared in people who used sunscreens more than those who didn’t.
Cancer-Causing Biohazards – Sunscreens
The author of “Sunscreens – Biohazard: Treat as Hazardous Waste”, Dr. Elizabeth Plourde, explains the serious dangers of using sunscreen to both, humans and the environment.
She proves that skin cancers like malignant melanoma considerably increases when using sunscreen for more than 30 years. As Dr. Elizabeth explains, a lot of sunscreens contain cancer-causing chemicals and endocrine disruptors.
In addition, she emphasizes that coral and other sea populations have disappeared in areas with excessive exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals. Also, that in the prevalence of gender-bending fish in those areas has increased.
In one of her mice studies, she shows that exposure to sunscreens raises maternal and pup mortality. Also, she proves the increased rate of reproductive problems in the following generations.
What’s more, the book presents the detrimental effects of sunscreen chemicals on rivers, oceans, and municipal drinking water. A testing showed that 97 percent of people in America contain sunscreen chemicals in their blood.
As a conclusion, Dr. Elizabeth focuses on the importance of vitamin D3. She says the lack of this vitamin is connected to sun avoidance and overuse of sunscreens. So, if you are one of those who avoid sun and/or use sunscreens, it’s best to take vitamin D3 supplements.
