The pet named Bubba was found in a hotel room after officers served an arrest warrant for Joshua West, 40, in Orange County, California.
Tustin Police Lt Robert Wright told CNN that drugs were found in the hotel room, along with used needles.
Turned over to Orange County Animal Care, animal control officers noticed the dog was acting ‘lethargic’, according to KCBS/KCAL.
Following a urine test the dog was found to be under the influence of drugs.
Wright told KCBS/KCAL: ‘This strikes me as pretty horrible. This is the first time we’ve ever heard of someone reporting that an animal has been under the influence.’
Authorities are still unsure how the drugs got into the dog’s system.
West was on parole for drugs violations when he was arrested in March. Tustin Police have requested he be charged with animal cruelty along with illegal drug possession.
Bubba is expected to put up for adoption soon.
