All companies advertise their foods directly to children through TV ad radio commercials, spending $10 billion a year in order to actively influence their food choices. In this way they are making sure that children will pick the extra-sugary cereals with the movie star character on the box, or even the fruit snack loaded with artificial preservatives shaped like animals. These foods are with poor nutritional quality which are potentially dangerous to their health, and thus are categorized as “junk food”.
How these ingredients affect our health?
There is artificial food coloring which make foods look more appealing to kids. Yellow 5 (tartrazine) and Red 40 are commonly used colors which are made from petroleum. They are used to enhance products like Fruit Loops, Jell-O, Kool-Aid, macaroni and cheese, popsicles, fruit roll-ups, and Nutri-Grain cereal bars. The dyes are associated with health issues like allergic reactions, hyperactivity, and cancer. UK banned these colors, however, the US companies are still using them freely. The US manufacturers put 15 million pounds of eight different synthetic dyes into the food each year. They are aware that these dyes can impair the behavior of children, but nothing is done to prevent them from using the dyes.
This is a list of products that contain artificial dyes which pose danger to our health:
Fruit Snacks– The food color most often used in these “fruit” flavored snacks is Red 3 or erythrosine, a petroleum product which has been banned for use in cosmetics due to its connection with thyroid tumors. It is unsafe to use on your skin, but eating it is no problem? Avoid the gummy section!
M&M’s- Despite chocolate, these delicious candies include Yellow 5 and 6 which have been associated with cancer, Blue 1, which may trigger the development of malignant tumors, Red 40 which damages DNA, and Blue 2, which increases hyperactivity and has been related to brain tumors.
Teddy Grahams- Your favorite tiny bears are laced with TBHQ, which has been found to lead to stomach cancer in lab rats, fragments DNA, and damages umbilical cells and the human lungs. In the case of children, this substance may lead to restlessness, anxiety, can aggravate the ADHD symptoms.
Cheetos – the color is received by Yellow 6 that is derived from petroleum just like the “cheese” flavor that includes methyl benzoate and ethyl methylphenidate.
Pop Tarts – The best Pop Tarts flavor, Frosted Strawberry, contains sugar, corn syrup, dextrose, and high-fructose corn syrup, all of which have been found to lead to liver issues, diabetes, and sugar addiction in children.
Moreover, they contain TBHQ, a petroleum-based product that leads to cellular dysfunction, and has been associated with vision loss, paralysis, tumors, liver enlargement, and convulsions in lab tests.
Therefore, the prolonged use of these harmful artificial food colorings, especially in children’s snacks, seriously endangers the health and increases the risk of severe diseases.
Hence, you need to be cautious and make sure your children avoid snacks with such dyes. Instead, show them the benefits of the taste of the natural rainbow, one of organic vegetables and fruits.
