Raised beds make gardening much easier, and they are an excellent choice in case the ground is uneven and rocky, or the soil is poor, excessively acidic, or clayey.
Beds filled with high-quality compost ensure a proper drainage and soil aeration will support the root run of plants and prevent competition from tree roots in the ground.
These beds can have ericaceous plants growing in one and sweet soil in the other, they will ensure the needed pH of the soil and prevent the occurrence of crawlies. Also, they are a perfect way to grow more food in less space.
Bed gardening is highly beneficial and advantageous, and the raised beds are easy and simple to make.
We suggest several ways to help you get started:
You should source three 8 ft long logs, and using a chainsaw, cut one of them into two 4 ft long pieces for the shorter sides. Next, mark a 4ft x 8ft rectangle on the ground, out the two long logs 4 ft apart and parallel to each other, while the shorter logs should be placed on both sides.
Move the logs a bit towards one another, and wedge several rocks in the space between the logs and the ground. Then, fill the beds. As a support, you can use 2 ft long sections of rebar, and hammer them down near the logs, 2-3 each to every side.
Sandbags for sides
Purchase 20 sandbags measuring 1ft x 3ft ready-to-use sandbags and the needed amount of sand.
You should mark the outline of a 4ft x 8ft rectangle on the ground, and then place the sandbags in one file on all sides. Next, build another layer and tamp it down.
You should line the bed’s interior with several layers of newspaper in order to prevent weeds, and fill the bed with compost, high-quality garden soil, grass clippings, and crushed leaves
Concrete block edging
Choose 8” by 8” by 16” concrete blocks, and you will need sixteen of them to get a one-layer bed, eight inches tall. Mark the outline, out two of these blocks, end to end, and one block each at right angles at both ends. This will give you the corners, and the side will be 4 ft on the outside.
Place the blocks along this side, and the last two will form the short side at the far end. You can plant immediately if you use cured compost and soil. In the case of fresh leaves, grass clippings, or farmyard manure used with compost, you will need a few weeks of curing.
Use 10-12 wooden planks, measuring 8 ft each, to build the sides of the beds. Cut another plank into two 4ft planks for the other two sides. The bottom of the raised bed should be open for roots to find their way into the deeper soil since the cardboard and paper disintegrates.
To support the planks on the outside, use 2ft sections of rebar. Then, mark the 4×8 outline on the ground, hammer down the rebar sections deep into the ground, 3 each on the long sides and 2 each on the short sides, and leave only 10 inches of them above the ground.
Make sure the planks stand on their edges and against the rebar stumps, and adjust them to make a snug fit. Use rocks to hold them while filling with soil.
Now, before you start your raised beds, we give you several additional tips in order to ensure a plentiful harvest within a year:
— Make sure you always use good quality soil, loose and rich in nutrients and organic matter
— The plants should receive at least eight hours of full sun each day, so locate the garden in the sunniest part of your yard, and avoid wet areas.
-You need to clean the area from grass or perennial weeds
— If you cannot find a good quality topsoil, make a 50-50 blend of soilless growing medium (often called “potting soil”) and compost.
— Make sure you plant your crops in the best time
— Consider the frost dates and the temperature of the soil
— You should transplant the young seedlings into the garden in calm and cool weather, and shield them from the wind and sun
-As soon as the plant is properly established, reduce the watering chores, except when the weather is too hot
-You can use a good water-soluble fertilizer once monthly
-After several months, most of the vegetables will mature and note that they are the most nutritious and delicious if harvested just before their ripeness peak
